It has been found that an employee of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been paid equivalent to a £469,500 annual salary as interim director of nursing and midwifery.
It is understood that the wage is more than three times what was allowed under Welsh Government rules. The role should come under pay band 14, which offers a maximum annual salary of £149,334 (not £469,500).
This latest financial scandal forms part of a series of disclosures that amount to a financial crisis at the troubled Health Board. For example, £1,763,245.17 was overpaid by the Health Board to its staff between March 2020 and April 2022, and Audit Wales have found that £122 million had not been properly accounted for.
Commenting on the excessive salary, Janet said:
“Taxpayers in Aberconwy and North Wales must have confidence that those responsible for spending on public services are good stewards of the limited resources allocated to them.
“The Health Board should urgently clarify why a director was able to be paid three times what is allowed according to the rules.
“Time and again evidence comes forward that financial and governance arrangements at the Health Board have failed.
“As I have stated on several times, there needs to be a clear-out of the executive team so that the Health Board can have a fresh start.”

Canfuwyd bod un o weithwyr Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr wedi cael ei dalu’r hyn sy'n cyfateb i gyflog blynyddol o £469,500 fel cyfarwyddwr nyrsio a bydwreigiaeth dros dro.
Deellir bod y cyflog fwy na theirgwaith yr hyn a ganiatawyd o dan reolau Llywodraeth Cymru. Dylai'r rôl ddod o dan fand cyflog 14, sy'n cynnig uchafswm cyflog blynyddol o £149,334 (nid £469,500).
Mae'r sgandal ariannol diweddaraf hwn yn rhan o gyfres o ddatgeliadau sydd wedi achosi argyfwng ariannol yn y Bwrdd Iechyd cythryblus. Er enghraifft, cafodd £ 1,763,245.17 ei ordalu gan y Bwrdd Iechyd i'w staff rhwng mis Mawrth 2020 ac Ebrill 2022, ac mae Archwilio Cymru wedi canfod nad oes cyfrif iawn wedi’i roi am £122 miliwn.
Wrth sôn am y cyflog gormodol, dywedodd Janet:
"Rhaid i drethdalwyr yn Aberconwy a Gogledd Cymru fod yn hyderus bod y rhai sy'n gyfrifol am wario ar wasanaethau cyhoeddus yn gwneud defnydd da o'r adnoddau cyfyngedig a ddyrannwyd iddyn nhw.
"Dylai'r Bwrdd Iechyd egluro ar unwaith pam y derbyniodd un o’r cyfarwyddwyr deirgwaith yn fwy o gyflog na’r hyn sy'n cael ei ganiatáu yn ôl y rheolau.
"Dro ar ôl tro daw tystiolaeth i’r fei bod trefniadau ariannol a llywodraethu yn y Bwrdd Iechyd wedi methu.
"Fel yr wyf wedi dweud sawl gwaith, mae angen cael gwared ar y tîm gweithredol fel y gall y Bwrdd Iechyd ddechrau o'r newydd."
