Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is deeply concerned by a distinct lack of urgency to repair the lift at Llandudno Hospital.
Sadly, all operations at the hospital have been cancelled due to a broken lift between the operating theatre and Maesdu Ward.
As a consequence, the Llandudno operating lists and 14 member operating staff team have been transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd, a hospital that is already under significant strain.
However, due to the wave of emergency operations required in Ysbyty Gwynyedd, several patients on Llandudno lists are having their operations cancelled, causing significant distress to residents.
In fact, apparently as many as 100 patients have had their operations cancelled at Ysbyty Gwynedd since March. On the 11 of July, we have been advised that 17 patients were sent home from Bangor without having had their operations.
Janet has raised this to the Welsh Government in both a letter and a statement yesterday as the situation requires immediate action from the Cabinet Secretary for Health, however, sadly there was little enthusiasm from the Welsh Government, seemingly passing the buck off to the Chair of Betsi Health Board.
Commenting on this news Janet said:
“I have become increasingly alarmed by this situation the more I have discovered about it.
“It has allegedly been ongoing since March with little or no progress made towards the lift being fixed.
“It is absolutely vital that we repair this lift immediately. This easy fix offers huge potential to increasing capacity at a time when the Betsi Health Board is at breaking point.
“Sadly, there seems to be an issue of hot potato with no one wanting to take responsibility for fixing it.
“I have already written to the Cabinet Secretary for Health highlighting the ludicrousness of having a ward and theatre out of action in Llandudno at a time when Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd are overwhelmed.
“Someone needs to take responsibility for this and work towards a solution as soon as possible.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy yn bryderus iawn am y diffyg brys amlwg i atgyweirio'r lifft yn Ysbyty Llandudno.
Yn anffodus, mae'r holl lawdriniaethau yn yr ysbyty wedi cael eu canslo oherwydd bod y lifft wedi torri rhwng y theatr lawdriniaeth a Ward Maesdu.
O ganlyniad, mae rhestrau llawdriniaethau Llandudno a 14 aelod staff yr adran lawdriniaethau wedi cael eu trosglwyddo i Ysbyty Gwynedd, ysbyty sydd eisoes dan straen sylweddol.
Fodd bynnag, oherwydd y don o lawdriniaethau brys sydd angen eu gwneud yn Ysbyty Gwynedd, mae llawdriniaethau nifer o gleifion ar restrau Llandudno yn cael eu canslo gan achosi gofid sylweddol i breswylwyr.
Yn wir, mae'n debyg bod llawdriniaethau cymaint â 100 o gleifion wedi cael eu canslo yn Ysbyty Gwynedd ers mis Mawrth. Ar 11 Gorffennaf, cawsom ein hysbysu bod 17 o gleifion wedi cael eu hanfon adref o Fangor heb gael eu llawdriniaethau.
Mae Janet wedi cyflwyno'r mater hwn gerbron Llywodraeth Cymru mewn llythyr a datganiad ddoe gan fod y sefyllfa'n gofyn am weithredu ar unwaith gan Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Iechyd. Fodd bynnag, yn anffodus, nid oedd llawer o frwdfrydedd gan Lywodraeth Cymru, ac ymddengys fel petai'n trosglwyddo'r baich i Gadeirydd Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr.
Wrth sôn am y mater hwn, dywedodd Janet:
“Rwy’n pryderu mwy a mwy am y sefylla hon y mwyaf rwy'n darganfod amdani.
“Mae'n debyg bod hyn wedi bod yn digwydd ers mis Mawrth gydag ychydig iawn o gynnydd neu ddim cynnydd o gwbl yn cael ei wneud o ran trwsio'r lifft.
“Mae'n gwbl hanfodol ein bod yn trwsio'r lifft hwn ar unwaith. Byddai'r ateb hawdd hwn yn cynnig potensial enfawr i gynyddu capasiti ar adeg pan fo Bwrdd Iechyd Betsi Cadwaladr o dan bwysau annioddefol.
“Yn anffodus, mae'n ymddangos bod y broblem hon yn daten boeth a does neb yn fodlon ysgwyddo'r cyfrifoldeb o'i datrys.
“Rwyf eisoes wedi ysgrifennu at Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Iechyd yn tynnu sylw at y ffaith ei bod yn hollol hurt bod yna ward a theatr yn Llandudno sydd ddim yn cael eu defnyddio ar adeg pan fo Ysbyty Gwynedd ac Ysbyty Glan Clwyd yn gwegian.
“Mae angen i rywun gymryd cyfrifoldeb am hyn a gweithio er mwyn canfod ateb cyn gynted â phosib.”
