Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has written to Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Welsh Government, so to highlight the fact that there were 9 recorded incidents where the crash barrier/aluminium railings separating National Cycle Route 5 from the Eastbound carriageway of the A55 were damaged in 2023. That is a considerable increase on the 0 incidents recorded in 2020 and 2021, and
1 incident in 2022.
Commenting on the safety of the A55 at Penmaen-bach Point, Janet said:
“I have seen photographic evidence of the barrier when damaged, and it had been forced over more than 50% of the pavement.
“There is no doubt in my mind that the barrier and railings do not adequately protect pedestrians and cyclists from vehicles on the A55.
“In light of the considerable increase in incidents at Penmaen-bach Point in 2023, I have asked the Deputy Minister for Climate Change to arrange for a review of the safety of National Cycle Route at this location.”

Letter to the Deputy Minister for Climate Change
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi ysgrifennu at Lee Waters AS, y Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd, Llywodraeth Cymru, er mwyn tynnu sylw at y ffaith bod 9 digwyddiad wedi'u cofnodi lle cafodd y rhwystr / rheiliau alwminiwm damwain sy'n gwahanu Llwybr Beicio Cenedlaethol 5 o gerbytffordd tua'r dwyrain yr A55, eu difrodi yn 2023. Mae hynny'n gynnydd sylweddol ar y 0 digwyddiad a gofnodwyd yn 2020 a 2021, ac 1 achos yn 2022.
Wrth sôn am ddiogelwch yr A55 ym Mhwynt Penmaen-bach, dywedodd Janet:
“Dwi wedi gweld tystiolaeth ffotograffig o'r rhwystr pan gafodd ei ddifrodi, ac roedd yn blocio dros 50% o'r palmant.
“Heb os nac oni bai, tydi'r rhwystr na'r rheiliau ddim yn ddigonol i arbed cerddwyr a beicwyr rhag cerbydau ar yr A55.
“Yng ngoleuni'r cynnydd sylweddol mewn digwyddiadau ym Mhenmaen-bach yn 2023, rwyf wedi gofyn i'r Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd drefnu adolygiad o ddiogelwch y Llwybr Beicio Cenedlaethol yn y lleoliad hwn.”
