After it became apparent that the Welsh Government had recommended that Conwy County Borough Council (C.C.B.C.) not progress with a proposed coastal defence improvement programme that would also see the return of sand to Llandudno’s North Shore beach, the Welsh Parliamentary Member for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS, has written to the Welsh Government expressing her disappointment with the decision and enquiring as to what other funding opportunities are available for this project.
Commenting on the matter Janet said:
“Sand is being used at Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay as a part of a coastal defence programme. As such, it is deeply disappointing that the Welsh Government will not support a similar programme of works being undertaken at Llandudno.
“The placement of quarry stones on North Shore beach of the Queen of Welsh Resorts was a true travesty and continues to prevent easy access to the beach for many residents and visitors. A pragmatic application of the CRMP funding by the Welsh Government provided the perfect opportunity to reverse this disastrous decision and provide a much-welcomed boost to our community’s tourism and hospitality industry as it continues to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.
“I have written to Julie James MS, the Minister for Climate Change to express my disappointment. I have also requested an explanation as to why the Welsh Government appear to believe that sand can be used as an appropriate coastal defence scheme in Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea but not in Llandudno.
“The Welsh Government need to prove categorically that the sand option does or does not provide additional flood alleviation. To dismiss such a popular option without clear supporting evidence is unacceptable.
“I will continue my fight to restore North Shore to her former glory and have now written to Vaughan Gething MS, Minster for the Economy, requesting that he inform me of what other possible Welsh Government funding opportunities exist for C.C.B.C. to utilise in order to see sand returned to this location.
“So that these Ministers can see the impact of the stones on our beach I have invited both Julie James and Vaughan Gething to meet with me here in Llandudno to talk about the future of North Shore.
“It is vital that the Welsh Government use common sense and listen to the people of Aberconwy and their elected officials.”

Galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gefnogi’r ymgyrch i ddod â thywod yn ôl i Draeth y Gogledd Llandudno
Ar ôl iddi ddod yn amlwg bod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi argymell na ddylai Cyngor Bwrdeistref Conwy fwrw rhagddi â rhaglen arfaethedig i wella’r amddiffynfeydd arfordirol a fyddai’n gweld tywod yn dychwelyd i Draeth y Gogledd yn Llandudno, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi ysgrifennu at Lywodraeth Cymru yn mynegi ei siom gyda’r penderfyniad, gan holi pa gyfleoedd cyllid eraill sydd ar gael ar gyfer y prosiect hwn.
Gan roi ei sylwadau ar y mater, dywedodd Janet:
“Mae tywod yn cael ei ddefnyddio yn Llandrillo-yn-rhos a Bae Colwyn fel rhan o raglen amddiffynfeydd arfordirol. Felly mae’n siomedig tu hwnt na fydd Llywodraeth Cymru yn cefnogi rhaglen waith debyg sydd ar waith yn Llandudno.
“Roedd gosod cerrig chwarel ar Draeth y Gogledd, traeth brenhines cyrchfannau Cymru, yn gywilyddus ac mae’n parhau i atal mynediad hawdd at y traeth i lawer o drigolion ac ymwelwyr. Roedd cais pragmatig am y cyllid CRMP gan Lywodraeth Cymru yn gyfle perffaith i ailystyried y penderfyniad trychinebus hwnnw a rhoi hwb mawr ei angen i ddiwydiant twristiaeth a lletygarwch ein cymuned wrth iddo barhau i geisio dod dros effeithiau COVID-19.
“Rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Julie James AS, y Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd i fynegi fy siom. Rwyf hefyd wedi gofyn am esboniad pam ei bod yn ymddangos fod Llywodraeth Cymru yn credu y gellir defnyddio tywod fel rhan o gynllun amddiffynfeydd arfordirol priodol ym Mae Colwyn a Llandrillo-yn-rhos, ond nad oes modd gwneud hynny yn Llandudno.
“Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru brofi’n bendant bod yr opsiwn tywod yn cynnig amddiffyniad pellach rhag llifogydd, neu nad yw’n gwneud hynny. Mae’n annerbyniol diystyru opsiwn mor boblogaidd heb dystiolaeth ategol amlwg.
“Byddaf yn parhau gyda’m brwydr i adfer Traeth y Gogledd yn ôl i’w ogoniant godidog gwreiddiol, ac rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Vaughan Gething AS, Gweinidog yr Economi, yn gofyn iddo fy hysbysu pa gyfleoedd am gyllid eraill sydd gan Lywodraeth Cymru a allai fod ar gael i Gyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy i’w defnyddio er mwyn gweld tywod eto yn y lleoliad hwn.
“Er mwyn i’r Gweinidogion hyn weld effaith y cerrig ar ein traeth, rwyf wedi gwahodd Julie James a Vaughan Gething i’m cyfarfod yma yn Llandudno i drafod dyfodol Traeth y Gogledd.
“Mae’n hanfodol bod Llywodraeth Cymru yn defnyddio synnwyr cyffredin ac yn gwrando ar bobl Aberconwy a’u swyddogion etholedig.”
