Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken out about the fact that the target for cancer patients to start treatment within 62 days of suspicion continues to be missed in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
According to Digital Health and Care Wales:
- Only 55% started treatment within the target;
- It takes on average 76 days from the point of suspicion to the patient being informed whether or not they have cancer (75th percentile);
- It takes on average 113 days to receive first definitive treatment (75th percentile).
The concern caused by the data, leads on from the work undertaken by Mrs Finch-Saunders to highlight delays in breast MRI scan results being shared with residents.
Commenting on access to cancer treatment, Janet said:
“Time after time the Welsh Government reiterates that it is committed to improving cancer outcomes, but the reality is that targets are still being missed in North Wales.
“That only 55% are starting treatment in time in Betsi Cadwaladr is unacceptable.
“Despite cancer treatment improving, the reality is that the disease does still cause loss of life. In fact, over 600 women die every year in Wales with breast cancer.
“There are several measures required to improve waiting times, including staffing. For example, I support the Welsh Conservatives proposal to enact a substantial workforce plan with a tuition fee refund for healthcare workers at its heart.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o'r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi siarad am y ffaith bod y targed i gleifion canser ddechrau triniaeth o fewn 62 diwrnod o amau achos o ganser yn parhau i gael ei fethu ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr.
Yn ôl Iechyd a Gofal Digidol Cymru:
- Dim ond 55% ddechreuodd eu triniaeth o fewn y targed;
- Mae'n cymryd 76 diwrnod ar gyfartaledd o'r adeg lle'r amheuir canser i adeg rhoi gwybod i'r claf a oes ganddo ganser ai peidio (75ain canradd);
- Ar gyfartaledd, mae'n cymryd 113 diwrnod i dderbyn triniaeth ddiffiniol gyntaf (75ain canradd).
Mae'r pryder a achosir gan y data yn arwain o'r gwaith a wnaed gan Mrs Finch-Saunders i dynnu sylw at yr oedi cyn rhannu canlyniadau sganiau MRI y fron â thrigolion.
Wrth sôn am fynediad at driniaeth canser, dywedodd Janet:
“Dro ar ôl tro mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn dweud ei bod yn ymroi i wella canlyniadau canser, ond y gwir amdani yw ei bod yn dal i fethu'r targedau yma'n y Gogledd.
“Mae'r ffaith mai dim ond 55% sy'n dechrau triniaeth mewn pryd yn ardal Betsi Cadwaladr yn annerbyniol.
“Er bod triniaeth canser yn gwella, y gwir amdani yw bod y clefyd yn dal i arwain at golli bywydau. Yn wir, mae 600 a mwy o fenywod yn marw bob blwyddyn yng Nghymru gyda chanser y fron.
“Mae angen sawl mesur i wella amseroedd aros, gan gynnwys staffio. Er enghraifft, rwy'n cefnogi cynnig y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig i ddeddfu cynllun gweithlu sylweddol gydag ad-daliad ffioedd dysgu ar gyfer gweithwyr gofal iechyd wrth galon y cynllun."
