Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is shocked to learn that in a 12 month period there were approximately 230 unsafe discharges from medical facilities in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
In response to a recent Freedom of Information request it has been revealed that between 1st February 2023 and 1st February 2024 the unsafe discharges were as follows:
Reason for unsafe discharge
Number of patients
Discharge - wrong patient conveyed = ≤5
Discharge inappropriate = 221
Discharged - to wrong location/address = ≤5
Wrong address/destination provided = ≤5
Total
c230
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“Clearly this outlines the seriousness of the issues facing the Health Board. Indeed, having approximately 5 patients wrongly conveyed, i.e they were moved to the wrong place, is extremely worrying.
“Even more alarming is that 221 patients have been discharged inappropriately. The potential risk posed to those residents causes me significant concern.
“This speaks to poor management and the wider issues that the Betsi Health Board are having to deal with, chief among which is the fact that staffing levels are at all time lows with numerous vacancies across multiple departments.
“If we were to assign responsibility, I believe the primary responsibility lies with Vaughan Gething. As Health Minister, his decisions to use the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board as a political football, kicking it in and out of special measures to align with Welsh Labour's electoral interests, were a disgrace and are where accountability should rest.”

Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:
“Yn amlwg mae hyn yn amlinellu difrifoldeb y problemau sy'n wynebu'r Bwrdd Iechyd. Yn wir, mae cael tua 5 claf yn cael eu cludo ar gam, h.y. eu symud i'r lle anghywir, yn destun cryn bryder.
“Hyd yn oed yn fwy brawychus yw bod 221 o gleifion wedi cael eu rhyddhau’n amhriodol. Mae'r risg bosibl a achosir i'r trigolion hynny yn peri pryder sylweddol i mi.
“Mae hyn yn arwydd o reolaeth wael a'r problemau ehangach y mae'n rhaid i Fwrdd Iechyd Betsi ymdrin â nhw, a’r broblem bennaf yw bod lefelau staffio yn is nag erioed gyda llawer o swyddi gwag mewn sawl adran.
“Pe baem yn neilltuo cyfrifoldeb, rwy'n credu mai Vaughan Gething sy’n bennaf gyfrifol. Fel Gweinidog Iechyd, roedd ei benderfyniadau i ddefnyddio Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr fel pêl-droed wleidyddol, gan ei chicio i mewn ac allan o fesurau arbennig i gyd-fynd â buddiannau etholiadol Llafur Cymru, yn warthus ac ef ddylai fod yn atebol.”
