Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, witnessed the outrage of farmers and rural communities in Wales protesting at the Welsh Labour Conference, whose concerns were ultimately ignored by both the UK Government.
During the Welsh Labour Conference in Llandudno on Saturday hundreds of farmers turned out to protest the introduction of inheritance tax on farms in April 2026.
Sadly, no-one from either the Welsh or Westminster Governments came out to speak with the farmers about their worries or concerns.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“It was quite the spectacle. Hundreds turned up outside Venue Cymru with their banners, placards and tractors.
“My good friend Gareth Wyn Jones was out leading much of the protest, urging the UK Government to reconsider their blatant attack on our Welsh farmers.
“Appallingly, they were snubbed by the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and indeed by Welsh Ministers who clearly decided that the plights of Wales’s farming community was not worth their time.
“It was a complete misjudgement by the Welsh Government with Eluned Morgan MS more interested in turning tables on the decks rather than engaging in a dialogue with rural communities on how best they can support the backbone of this country and a sector that feels under attack by the state.
“There is no doubt in my mind of the huge disconnect between Government and farmers and this weekend we saw it personified. It was in stark contrast to our Welsh Conservative Conference in February where the then Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, met with farmers to discuss what he could do better to support them in Wales.”
