Janet Finch-Saunders First Minister, I am sure that you would agree that, in 2014, to learn of a 15-year-old pupil, a young lady, being punished for wearing the wrong school shoes, despite an explanation from her mother earlier of their current financial circumstances is terrible in this day and age. It does raise many questions. I have taken it upon myself to write to Conwy County Borough Council to ascertain what its advice and guidance is. Would you agree with me that this situation must never happen again to any of our schoolchildren in Wales, and also that any school uniform policy is one that involves the school governors, the teachers and the staff and is one that encompasses common sense, individual discretion and compassion?
Carwyn Jones Yes and I think that I said that in the answer that I gave to the previous Member. I have also had concern over the years when I have seen situations where school uniforms can only be purchased from a particular shop at a particular price that is well beyond what the price would be in, for example, a supermarket. I think that schools should think very carefully about implementing policies such as that, which perhaps provides a source of income for the school—that much is possibly true—but, nevertheless, financially penalises parents.
