Janet Finch-Saunders has spoken of her delight following her re-adoption by the Aberconwy Conservative Association as their candidate for the Senedd elections in May 2021. Mrs Finch-Saunders has been the Member for Aberconwy since 2011, and currently serves as the Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy, and Rural Affairs.
Janet has long been a stalwart of local politics, having previously represented the Craig-Y-Don ward on the Llandudno Town Council and Conwy County Borough Council. During her time on the Local Authority, she served as the Cabinet Member with overall responsibility for Community Safety, as well as holding the roles of Chair of the Principal Scrutiny Committee and Leader of the Welsh Conservative Group. Mrs Finch-Saunders was also a former Mayor of Llandudno, a position that was held by both of her parents before her.
Throughout her tenure in the Welsh Parliament, Janet has served as Shadow Minister for Local Government, and then as the Shadow Minister for Social Care, Children, Young People, and Older People. She currently serves as the Chair of the Senedd Petitions Committee and initiated the Cross-Party Group on Small Shops during the Fourth Assembly.
Commenting on her re-adoption, Janet said:
“It is an incredible privilege to have been re-adopted by the Aberconwy Conservative Association as their candidate for the Senedd elections in May 2021. It was the honour of a lifetime to have been elected as the constituency’s very first Welsh Conservative Assembly Member in 2011, and then again in 2016 where I successfully increased our vote share. I look forward to continuing this success.
“My priorities remain supporting our fantastic tourism businesses and addressing the serious failings of our health board here in Aberconwy, especially as it has remained in special measures for five years. I am also looking forward to continuing my work on flooding, as well as my campaigns to support our farmers and help the green economy grow, by supporting the expansion of a raft of bold and innovative renewable technologies that will bring highly skilled green collar jobs home.
“All elected members are chosen to represent the views of their constituents and I take that duty incredibly seriously. I have undertaken several major public meetings over recent years, including on broadband, flooding, bus services and highway issues. Each meeting has resulted in positive outcomes for our constituents and businesses on these issues of local concern.
“The need for efficient and responsible governance has never been more pressing. As a direct result of the mismanagement of the current Welsh Labour administration, our Health Board remains in special measures, local ambulance waiting times have often left elderly patients waiting for vital help and our social care system is failing our children and vulnerable older people.
“We can do better, which is why the Welsh Conservatives are promising a devolution revolution. It is time for a better deal for Aberconwy; one that understands the realities and needs of North Wales. This will only be delivered by electing a Welsh Conservative government next year.”
