The Welsh Conservatives have discovered that there is just one lamppost charging point in the entirety of Wales. This was confirmed by the Labour Deputy Minister for Transport in a written question response to the Welsh Conservatives.
Commenting on the Written Question response she has received, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Said:
“In 2020 I urged the Labour Government to investigate how it could support the conversion of publicly available lampposts into electric car charging points. Three years on it is a disgrace that there is only one in the whole of Wales.
“When considering that London already has at least 7,000, the Labour Government has no excuse for the lack of provision here.
“Rather than wait for a feasibility study, the Deputy Minister should act decisively so that residents without off-street parking have access to lamppost charging.”
Shadow Minister for Transport, Natasha Asghar MS, added:
“It’s incredibly frustrating, but hardly surprising, that Wales has only one lamppost charging point given we are drastically lagging behind other countries when it comes to installing basic electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
“I have no doubt more people would look at switching to greener methods of transport, such as electric vehicles, if it was practical but sadly Labour Minister in Cardiff Bay are all talk and no action – as is often the case.
“We need to see the Labour Government get into gear with electric vehicle charging devices – including lamppost charging points – rolled out at speed because time really is of the essence, especially if Wales needs between 30,000 – 50,000 charging points by 2030 as the Labour Government predicts.”

Mae’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig wedi darganfod mai dim ond un polyn lamp gwefru sydd i’w gael yng Nghymru gyfan. Cafodd hyn ei gadarnhau gan y Dirprwy Weinidog sy’n gyfrifol am Drafnidiaeth yn y Blaid Lafur mewn ymateb i gwestiwn ysgrifenedig gan y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig.
Wrth roi sylwadau ar yr ymateb a dderbyniodd i’w chwestiwn, meddai Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd i’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, Janet Finch-Saunders, AS:
“Yn 2020 gofynnais i’r Llywodraeth Lafur ymchwilio i sut y gallai gefnogi’r gwaith o drosi polion lamp cyhoeddus sydd ar gael yn bwyntiau gwefru ceir trydan. Dair blynedd yn ddiweddarach mae’n warthus mai dim ond un sydd ar gael yng Nghymru gyfan..
“Wrth ystyried bod o leiaf 7,00 ohonynt yn Llundain eisoes, does gan y Llywodraeth ddim esgus am y diffyg darpariaeth.
“Yn hytrach nag aros am astudiaeth ddichonolrwydd, dylai’r Dirprwy Weinidog weithredu’n bendant fel bod trigolion sydd heb le parcio oddi ar y stryd yn gallu cael mynediad i bolion lamp gwefru.”
Ychwanegodd Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Drafnidiaeth i’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, Natasha Asghar AS:
“Mae’n rhwystredig iawn, ond yn fawr o syndod, mai dim ond un polyn lamp gwefru sydd yng Nghymru wrth ystyried ein bod ni ar ei hôl hi’n ddifrifol o gymharu â gwledydd eraill o ran gosod seilwaith sylfaenol i wefru cerbydau trydan.
“Rwy’n argyhoeddedig y byddai mwy o bobl yn ystyried newid i ddulliau trafnidiaeth gwyrddach, fel cerbydau trydan, pe bai hynny’n ymarferol ond y tristwch yw bod y Gweinidog Llafur ym Mae Caerdydd yn siarad am hyn heb weithredu – fel sy’n wir yn aml.
“Mae angen i ni weld y Llywodraeth Lafur yn bwrw ati i osod dyfeisiau gwefru cerbydau trydan – yn cynnwys polion lamp gwefru – gan weithredu’n gyflym gan fod amser yn hollbwysig, yn enwedig os yw Cymru angen rhwng 30,000 – 50,000 o bwyntiau gwefru erbyn 2030 fel mae’r Llywodraeth Lafur yn ei ragweld."
