The Minister for Climate Change has admitted that Labour’s policy to build 20,000 new, low carbon social homes for rent is ‘hanging by a thread.’
The Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, challenged the Minister for Climate Change, on the possibility that housing associations in Wales may have to stall the building of new social housing.
During a recent meeting with Registered Social Landlords, the Shadow Minister was warned that if landlords are unable to increase rents in line with inflation this year, serious cuts will have to be made to building projects. It is estimated that between 3,000-6,000 new social homes are required over the next five years.
Commenting after her contribution, the Shadow Minister said:
“Over the last decade Labour has only seen around a thousand housing association and local authority homes built annually.
“At a time that is seeing vast increases in temporary accommodation spend and residents waiting years for social housing - we cannot afford to see fewer homes built.
“This warning by the sector needs to be taken seriously. Labour ministers must engage with the sector and use every lever at its disposal to ensure that building work can continue.
“As it stands, it seems that the Minister for Climate Change agrees with me that the Labour manifesto commitment to ‘Build 20,000 new, low carbon social homes for rent’ is hanging by a thread. I urge her to listen and take immediate action to resolve this situation, and ultimately deliver homes for those desperately requiring accommodation.”

Mae’r Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd wedi cyfaddef bod polisi Llafur i adeiladu 20,000 o gartrefi cymdeithasol newydd, carbon isel i’w rhentu yn y fantol.
Fe wnaeth Gweinidog Tai Gwrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, Janet Finch-Saunders AS, herio’r Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd, ar y posibilrwydd y gallai cymdeithasau tai yng Nghymru orfod arafu’r broses o adeiladu tai cymdeithasol newydd.
Yn ystod cyfarfod diweddar gyda Landlordiaid Cymdeithasol Cofrestredig, fe gafodd Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid rybudd os na all landlordiaid gynyddu rhenti yn unol â chwyddiant eleni, y bydd rhaid gwneud toriadau difrifol i brosiectau adeiladu. Amcangyfrifir bod angen rhwng 3,000-6,000 o gartrefi cymdeithasol newydd dros y pum mlynedd nesaf.
Wrth sôn am ei chyfraniad, dywedodd Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid:
“Dros y ddegawd ddiwethaf, dim ond tua mil o gartrefi cymdeithasau tai ac awdurdodau lleol sydd wedi’u hadeiladu bob blwyddyn dan law Llafur.
“Ar adeg sy’n gweld cynnydd enfawr mewn gwariant ar lety dros dro a phreswylwyr yn aros blynyddoedd am dai cymdeithasol - allwn ni ddim fforddio gweld llai o dai yn cael eu hadeiladu.
“Mae angen cymryd rhybudd y sector o ddifri. Rhaid i weinidogion Llafur ymgysylltu â’r sector a defnyddio pob sbardun sydd ar gael er mwyn sicrhau bod gwaith adeiladu yn gallu parhau.
“Fel y mae pethau’n sefyll, mae’n ymddangos bod y Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yn cytuno â mi bod ymrwymiad maniffesto Llafur i ‘Adeiladu 20,000 o gartrefi cymdeithasol newydd, carbon isel i’w rhentu’ yn y fantol. Rwy’n ei hannog i wrando a gweithredu ar unwaith i ddatrys y sefyllfa hon, ac yn y pen draw darparu cartrefi i’r rhai sydd wir angen llety.”
