Janet Finch-Saunders MS is supporting the campaign led by the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce ahead of Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Day.
The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy expressed her hope that the day would raise more awareness of the symptoms of these deadly cancers, and for anyone to seek medical help at the earliest opportunity if they recognise any of the signs.
The 11th of January 2023 is Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Day, run by the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce. The day aims to raise the profile of these six cancers, to raise awareness of symptoms and to highlight the critical importance of early diagnosis in improving survival.
The six less survivable cancers are cancers of the lung, pancreas, liver, brain, oesophagus and stomach. More than 4,400 people will be diagnosed each year in Wales with one of these 6 cancers and, because of the short prognosis, they make up over 40% of all deaths from cancer each year.
Speaking today, Janet said:
“These cancers simply have not seen the improvements in outcomes that have been made in other cancer areas in recent decades.
“Less survivable cancers are difficult to diagnose, with vague or non-specific symptoms. We need to raise awareness of less survivable cancers and their symptoms with the public, encouraging people to see their GP if they have worrying symptoms.
“We need to do everything we can to raise awareness of these Less Survivable Cancers, to ensure and earlier and faster diagnosis.
“The Welsh Government must also ensure that Less Survivable Cancers are prioritised in the Wales Cancer Services Action Plan”.
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS yn cefnogi’r ymgyrch dan arweiniad Tasglu Canserau Llai Goroesadwy cyn Diwrnod Ymwybyddiaeth Canserau Llai Goroesadwy.
11 Ionawr 2023 yw Diwrnod Ymwybyddiaeth Canserau Llai Goroesadwy, sy’n cael ei gynnal gan y Tasglu Canserau Llai Goroesadwy. Nod y diwrnod yw codi proffil y chwe chanser hyn, hybu ymwybyddiaeth o’r symptomau ac amlygu pwysigrwydd aruthrol diagnosis cynnar wrth wella’r siawns o oroesi.
Y chwe chanser llai goroesadwy yw canserau’r ysgyfaint, y pancreas, yr iau, yr ymennydd, yr oesoffagws a’r stumog. Bob blwyddyn yng Nghymru, bydd mwy na 4,400 o bobl yn cael diagnosis o un o’r 6 chanser hyn ac, oherwydd y prognosis byr, maen nhw’n gyfrifol am dros 40% o’r holl farwolaethau o ganser bob blwyddyn.
Wrth siarad heddiw, dywedodd Janet:
“Yn syml, nid yw’r mathau hyn wedi gweld yr un gwelliannau o ran canlyniadau â mathau eraill o ganser yn ystod y degawdau diwethaf.
“Mae’n anodd cael diagnosis o ganserau llai goroesadwy, oherwydd bod y symptomau yn annelwig neu’n amhenodol. Mae angen i ni hybu ymwybyddiaeth o ganserau llai goroesadwy a’u symptomau ymhlith y cyhoedd, gan annog pobl i fynd i weld eu meddyg teulu os oes ganddyn nhw symptomau sy’n peri pryder.
“Mae angen i ni wneud popeth o fewn ein gallu i hybu ymwybyddiaeth o’r canserau llai goroesadwy hyn, er mwyn sicrhau diagnosis cynharach a chyflymach.
“Rhaid i Lywodraeth Cymru hefyd sicrhau bod Canserau Llai Goroesadwy yn cael eu blaenoriaethu yng Nghynllun Gweithredu Gwasanaethau Canser Cymru.”
