The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board have announced the presence of RAAC Concrete in the Bryn y Neuadd Hospital, in Llanfairfechan.
The Bryn y Neuadd Hospital is a mental health facility which cares for around 25 patients over 3 wards.
The RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) concrete has been found in the canteen of the hospital. This concrete was used in thousands of public buildings throughout the UK in the late 20th century, and has an estimated 30 year life span.
The issue of unsafe buildings at Bryn y Neuadd Hospital is not a new one. In February, Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy criticised the Welsh Government’s failure to discuss the backlog of £27.7 million, and 70% of the occupied floor area being recorded as “not functionally suitable”.
Speaking on the issue, Janet said:
“It is very concerning to hear of the presence of the dangerous RAAC concrete in a building that is already underfunded and in serious need of repairs.
“This hospital cares for vulnerable patients, and I believe is being neglected by both the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and the Welsh Government.
“I have requested a site visit to Bryn y Neuadd Hospital multiple times over the last year to no avail.
“It is imperative that the Health Board and the Welsh Government produce a plan of action to carry out the vital repairs needed so that the hospital is functionally suitable for staff and patients.
“I am in contact with the Health Board and have now requested an urgent site meeting with relevant officials”.
Mae Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr wedi cyhoeddi presenoldeb concrit awyredig awtoclafiedig cydnerth (RAAC) yn Ysbyty Bryn y Neuadd, yn Llanfairfechan.
Mae Ysbyty Bryn y Neuadd yn gyfleuster iechyd meddwl sy'n gofalu am tua 25 o gleifion dros 3 ward.
Mae RAAC wedi'i ganfod yn ffreutur yr ysbyty. Defnyddiwyd y concrit hwn mewn miloedd o adeiladau cyhoeddus ledled y DU ar ddiwedd yr 20fed ganrif, ac amcangyfrifir bod ganddo hyd oes o 30 mlynedd.
Dyw'r mater o adeiladau anniogel yn Ysbyty Bryn y Neuadd ddim yn fater newydd. Ym mis Chwefror, beirniadodd Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, fethiant Llywodraeth Cymru i drafod yr ôl-groniad o £27.7 miliwn, a 70% o'r arwynebedd llawr dan feddiant a gofnodir fel "ymarferol anaddas".
Wrth siarad am y mater, dywedodd Janet:
"Mae'n achos pryder mawr clywed am bresenoldeb RAAC mewn adeilad sydd eisoes heb ddigon o arian ac sydd angen gwaith atgyweirio sylweddol.
"Mae'r ysbyty hwn yn gofalu am gleifion bregus, ac rwy'n credu ei fod yn cael ei esgeuluso gan Fwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr, a Llywodraeth Cymru.
"Rwyf wedi gofyn am ymweliad safle ag Ysbyty Bryn y Neuadd sawl gwaith dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, ond yn ofer.
"Mae'n hanfodol bod y Bwrdd Iechyd a Llywodraeth Cymru yn llunio cynllun gweithredu i wneud y gwaith atgyweirio hanfodol sydd ei angen fel bod yr ysbyty yn addas ar gyfer staff a chleifion.
"Rydw i mewn cysylltiad â'r Bwrdd Iechyd a bellach wedi gofyn am gyfarfod safle brys gyda swyddogion perthnasol".
