Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy was pleased yesterday that the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies MS, made a statement on the Welsh marine environment.
The Welsh Government yesterday finally decided to address the pressing need for a wave of action to protect and enhance our seas and coastal areas.
When considering that most of Wales is out at sea, it is highly disappointing to have seen so little attention towards or marine environment.
113 million tonnes of carbon is stored in the top 10cm of marine sediments in Wales. According to NRW that represents almost 170% of the carbon held by Welsh forests, where a square meter of seagrass captures triple the amount of the equivalent from a rainforest and ten times the amount from grasslands.
Commenting on the news, Janet said:
“I am pleased that the Welsh Government have finally stepped up to the plate on our marine environment. It is time that we start to engage on this pressing issue.
“Myself and others have been campaigning on this for years, in the Siambr and in committee, so it is excellent news that the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs has finally listened to us.
“Welsh territorial seas cover some 32,000 square km, more than Wales itself. Therefore, there is potential for huge gains in sustainability and moving Wales closer to her Net Zero goals. There is no doubt in my mind that blue carbon should be accounted for in carbon budgets, and that there must be a clear plan for using blue carbon to help achieve Net Zero 2050.
“Indeed, we must summon a summit of the best marine scientists in the country with the aim of agreeing the most reasonable way to include blue carbon in the nation’s Net Zero 2050 plan.
“Here in North Wales we already have much of the expertise and knowledge required, thanks to Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences. Wales has an opportunity here to be trailblazers and deliver world leading initiatives and policies on blue carbon and our marine environment.”

Roedd Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, yn falch ddoe bod Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Newid Hinsawdd a Materion Gwledig, Huw Irranca-Davies AS, wedi gwneud datganiad ar amgylchedd morol Cymru.
O’r diwedd, mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi penderfynu mynd i'r afael â'r angen dybryd am don o weithredu i amddiffyn a gwella ein moroedd a'n hardaloedd arfordirol.
Wrth ystyried bod y rhan fwyaf o Gymru yng nghanol y môr, mae'n siomedig iawn ein bod wedi gweld cyn lleied o sylw yn cael ei roi i’r amgylchedd morol neu’r amgylchedd morol.
Mae 113 miliwn tunnell o garbon yn cael ei storio yn y 10cm uchaf o waddodion morol yng Nghymru. Yn ôl CNC mae hynny'n cynrychioli bron i 170% o'r carbon sy'n cael ei ddal yng nghoedwigoedd Cymru. Mae metr sgwâr o forwellt yn dal tair gwaith cymaint â choedwig law a deg gwaith cymaint â glaswelltiroedd.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
"Rwy'n falch bod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cydnabod yr hyn sy’n digwydd yn ein hamgylchedd morol o'r diwedd. Mae'n bryd i ni ddechrau mynd i’r afael â'r mater pwysig hwn.
"Rydw i ac eraill wedi bod yn ymgyrchu ar hyn ers blynyddoedd, yn y Siambr ac yn y pwyllgor, felly mae'n newyddion gwych bod Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Newid Hinsawdd a Materion Gwledig wedi gwrando o'r diwedd.
"Mae moroedd tiriogaethol Cymru yn gorchuddio rhyw 32,000 cilometr sgwâr, mwy na maint Cymru ei hun. Felly, mae potensial am enillion enfawr o ran cynaliadwyedd a symud Cymru'n agosach at ei nodau Sero Net. Does dim amheuaeth yn fy meddwl y dylid cyfrif am garbon glas mewn cyllidebau carbon, a bod yn rhaid cael cynllun clir ar gyfer defnyddio carbon glas i helpu i gyflawni Sero Net 2050.
"Yn wir, rhaid i ni alw uwchgynhadledd o'r gwyddonwyr morol gorau yn y wlad gyda'r nod o gytuno ar y ffordd fwyaf rhesymol o gynnwys carbon glas yng nghynllun Sero Net 2050 y genedl.
"Yma yn y Gogledd mae gennym eisoes lawer o'r arbenigedd a'r wybodaeth sydd eu hangen, diolch i Ysgol Gwyddorau Eigion Prifysgol Bangor. Mae gan Gymru gyfle yma i fod yn arloeswyr a chyflwyno mentrau a pholisïau blaenllaw ar garbon glas a'n hamgylchedd morol."
