The Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (11 November) used a question to the Welsh Counsel General to urge the Welsh Government to realise the nation’s exporting potential, especially of agricultural produce, to smaller countries which have already signed an agreement with the UK.
According to a recent Written Statement from the Counsel General, the UK Government has signed 21 roll over/continuity agreements so far and negotiations are ongoing on approximately 17 others.
Commenting on her question, Janet said:
“When reading the recent Written Statement from the Welsh Counsel General, I was most concerned by his resigned attitude and complaints that countries which had signed up to continuity agreements were ‘small and have little trade with Wales’. This attitude does a real disservice to our nation’s producers.
“I urge the Welsh Government to instead stand ready to ensure that our businesses can make the most from any agreements signed, realising the potential that these new markets can offer. This would mean refining the digital tools offered so as to better explain and promote the opportunities available.
“This tangible export potential was realised through the recent UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, securing additional benefits for Wales beyond the current EU-Japan trade deal, including increasing the number of geographical indicators as a way to officially recognise iconic Welsh products such as lamb and regional wines.
“Devolved administrations have meaningful engagement with the UK Government, such as through the Ministerial Forum for Trade, so it is vital that this administration is taking the necessary steps to realise our future exporting potential. After all, support for our farmers and producers also benefits local livestock markets, maintaining the rural economy and supporting local jobs.”
