Ahead of the launch of Great British Nuclear (GBN) today to drive the rapid expansion of new nuclear power plants in the UK at an unprecedented scale and pace, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Energy, and Virginia Crosbie MP, have visited Trawsfynydd to highlight the site’s incredible potential to help boost UK energy security.
As the project development company for the site, Cwmni Egino is putting together detailed proposals for the deployment of Small Modular Reactor technology at Trawsfynydd, with the aim of getting approval to build by the latter part of the decade.
Given the site’s heritage, studies have concluded that it is most suited for nuclear development. Following detailed assessments of a number of different options, two projects have been confirmed as having the greatest potential to deliver socio-economic benefits, including small scale nuclear reactors to generate low carbon energy.
Commenting after the visit, Janet said:
“The UK needs four times as much clean power as we have now to hit Net Zero by 2050, and nuclear energy at Trawsfynydd is ideally placed to be at the heart of a massive nuclear revival.
“Alongside exceptional access to grid capacity to supply power to around 2 million homes, Cwmni Egino are ideally placed to develop the site, and see it become host to over 400 high quality jobs locally.
“With the rich history of energy production amongst the mountains of Eryri, achieving cooperation between Cwmni Egnio, Great British Nuclear, and Welsh Government, would be a fantastic next chapter in the history of the area as a the Power Park of Wales and Great Britain.”
Speaking about how the rapid expansion of new nuclear power plants can be achieved in the UK, Virginia said:
“As chair of the cross-party All-Party parliamentary Group for small modular reactors - coupled with my determination to bring new nuclear to Wylfa – this was a particularly interesting and exciting visit.
“North Wales is full of huge opportunities to be part of delivering the UK nuclear agenda, especially now Great British Nuclear will drive through the new nuclear programme across the country.
“As part of this, I will be hosting several events as part of nuclear week in Westminster in September to do my best to drive this forward and bring nuclear jobs and investment to Anglesey and the North Wales region.”

Cyn lansio'r Great British Nuclear (GBN) heddiw i lywio'r gwaith o ehangu gorsafoedd pŵer niwclear newydd ar raddfa a chyflymder digynsail yn y DU, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Ynni, a’r Aelod Seneddol Virginia Crosbie, wedi ymweld â Thrawsfynydd i dynnu sylw at botensial anhygoel y safle i helpu i hybu diogelwch ynni'r DU.
Fel cwmni datblygu'r prosiect ar gyfer y safle, mae Cwmni Egino yn paratoi cynigion manwl ar gyfer defnyddio technoleg Adweithydd Modiwlaidd Bach yn Nhrawsfynydd, gyda'r nod o gael sêl bendith i'w adeiladu erbyn diwedd y degawd.
O ystyried treftadaeth y safle, mae astudiaethau wedi dod i'r casgliad ei fod yn hynod addas ar gyfer datblygiad niwclear. Yn dilyn asesiadau manwl o'r opsiynau gwahanol, cadarnhawyd bod dau brosiect â'r potensial mwyaf i sicrhau buddiannau economaidd-gymdeithasol, gan gynnwys adweithyddion niwclear ar raddfa fach i gynhyrchu ynni carbon isel.
Meddai Janet yn dilyn yr ymweliad:
“Mae angen pedair gwaith cymaint o bŵer glân ar y DU ag sydd gennym nawr er mwyn cyrraedd targed sero net erbyn 2050, ac mae ynni niwclear yn Nhrawsfynydd mewn sefyllfa ddelfrydol i fod wrth wraidd adfywiad niwclear enfawr.
“Ochr yn ochr â mynediad eithriadol i gapasiti'r grid i gyflenwi pŵer i oddeutu 2 filiwn o gartrefi, mae Cwmni Egino mewn sefyllfa ddelfrydol i ddatblygu'r safle a chynnig 400 a mwy o swyddi o ansawdd uchel yn lleol.
“Gyda hanes cyfoethog o gynhyrchu ynni yng nghanol Eryri, byddai sicrhau cydweithrediad rhwng Cwmni Egnio, Great British Nuclear, a Llywodraeth Cymru, yn bennod nesaf wych yn hanes yr ardal fel Parc Pŵer Cymru a Phrydain gyfan.”
Wrth siarad am sut y gellir ehangu gorsafoedd pŵer niwclear newydd yn gyflym yn y DU, dywedodd Virginia:
“Fel cadeirydd y Grŵp Seneddol Trawsbleidiol ar adweithyddion modiwlaidd bach - ynghyd â'm penderfyniad i ddenu gwaith niwclear newydd i Wylfa - roedd hwn yn ymweliad hynod ddiddorol a chyffrous.
“Mae Gogledd Cymru yn cynnig cyfleoedd enfawr i fod yn rhan o’r gwaith o gyflawni agenda niwclear y DU, yn enwedig gan y bydd Great British Nuclear yn gyrru’r rhaglen niwclear newydd ledled Prydain.
“Fel rhan o hyn, byddaf yn cynnal sawl digwyddiad fel rhan o wythnos niwclear yn San Steffan ym mis Medi er mwyn gwneud fy ngorau glas i ddenu swyddi a buddsoddiad niwclear i Ynys Môn a rhanbarth y Gogledd yn gyffredinol."
