Janet Finch-Saunders MS has praised the Supreme Court’s decision which upheld that the Scottish Parliament could not unilaterally hold another independence referendum.
The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy questioned the Counsel General and Minister for the Constitution, on whether the Welsh Government would acknowledge the judgement’s relevance to Wales.
Speaking in the Senedd Chamber, Janet said:
“This decision has huge constitutional significance for Scotland and Wales.
“It essentially means that Wales cannot hold an independence referendum without Westminster approval.
“Every time the independence question has been put to the people of Wales, most recently in the 2021 election, the party that made that offer came a distant third.
“The people of Wales spoke with one voice saying they wanted to remain in a strong United Kingdom.
“Unlike Plaid Cymru, who speak about further devolution and independence on almost a weekly basis, I believe that no further resources and time should be wasted on the constitutional question.
“We should now focus on using Welsh Government and Parliamentary resources to make the best use of the powers we do have”.
