Further to the long running campaign by Janet Finch-Saunders MS to see the risk of further damage to Pont Fawr reduced, Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Government have agreed to undertake a joint feasibility study of the bridge in 2024/25.
The study is to take place after the Member for Aberconwy successfully lobbied Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change, to take action.
The commission will include design for a pavement/road marking realignment on the A470, to help prevent larger vehicles from scraping and damaging the bridge parapet when they turn onto the structure.
Welcoming this positive progress, Janet said:
“After years of campaigning to protect Pont Fawr, I am delighted that there is now going to be a joint study by Welsh Government and Conwy County Borough Council.
“I have always maintained that the solution needs to involve the A470, so am pleased that local and national governments are listening.
“After so many Mexican standoffs and crashes on the bridge, it is a shame that it has taken years of letters and emails from me to get public bodies to take the future of Pont Fawr seriously”.

Yn dilyn yr ymgyrch hir gan Janet Finch-Saunders AS i leihau’r risg o ddifrod pellach i Bont Fawr, mae Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy a Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cytuno i gynnal astudiaeth ddichonoldeb ar y cyd mewn perthynas â’r bont yn 2024/25.
Bydd yr astudiaeth yn cael ei chynnal ar ôl i'r Aelod dros Aberconwy fod yn llwyddiannus wrth lobïo Lee Waters AS, y Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd, i weithredu.
Bydd y comisiwn yn cynnwys dylunio ar gyfer ailalinio marciau palmant/ffordd ar yr A470, er mwyn helpu i atal cerbydau mwy rhag crafu a difrodi parapetau’r bont pan fyddant yn troi i mewn i’r strwythur.
Wrth groesawu'r cynnydd cadarnhaol hwn, dywedodd Janet:
"Ar ôl blynyddoedd o ymgyrchu i amddiffyn Pont Fawr, rwy'n falch iawn o weld y bydd astudiaeth ar y cyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru a Chyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy.
"Rwyf bob amser wedi honni bod angen i'r ateb gynnwys yr A470, felly rwy'n falch bod llywodraethau lleol a chenedlaethol yn gwrando.
"Ar ôl cymaint o dagfeydd a damweiniau ar y bont, mae'n bechod ei bod wedi cymryd blynyddoedd o lythyru ac anfon e-byst i gael cyrff cyhoeddus i gymryd dyfodol Pont Fawr o ddifrif".
