The Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Energy and Rural Affairs – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has today (13 November) spoken of her concern about the lack of practical targets set for the new development company Cwmni Egino, to be based at the former power station at Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd.
In reply to a recent Written Question tabled by the Shadow Minister on 19/10/2020, the Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales wrote:
“Practical milestone targets have not yet been set – these will be agreed with the CEO once appointed. Projects identified to date however have the potential to create up to 700 on site jobs and attract up to £3bn in investment.”
According to a recent Written Statement on the matter, Cwmni Egino will help to “exploit the economic benefits of small modular reactors and associated technologies on site, including the potential for a medical research reactor, to provide a secure and sustainable supply of medical radioisotopes for Wales, the UK and Europe.”
Commenting, Janet said:
“Whilst I welcome the creation of Cwmni Egino as a concept, I am greatly concerned that the Welsh Government has not yet set practical milestone targets for the new development company, to be based at the former power station at Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd.
“I urge the Welsh Government to outline more details as a matter of priority, so that the Welsh Parliament may scrutinise these plans. The expertise and skill in the nuclear field in North Wales is well established, and so opposition Members must be able to review whether these targets will deliver on the bold promises claimed.
“As I have consistently said, the creation of long-term quality jobs should remain a cornerstone of any planned Coronavirus economic recovery, and so I welcome the news that this company has the potential to create up to 700 on-site jobs and attract up to £3 billion in investment. But actions talk louder than words, so practical and safe targets must be outlined.”
