Janet Finch-Saunders MS has called on the Welsh Government to abandon their disastrous housing regulations, which are stretching local government to breaking point.
The Member of the Senedd for Aberconwy questioned Rebecca Evans MS, the Minister for Finance and Local Government, regarding the impact of the Renting Homes (Wales) Act on the resources of local councils.
Speaking today in the Senedd chamber, Janet said:
“The Welsh Government continues to ignore my warnings, and even those of the Conwy First, Welsh Labour, and Plaid Cymru coalition Cabinet.
“Demand in Conwy County is increasing largely due to private rented sector evictions. The highest recorded s21 notices (no fault evictions) in one week is 30 and is now averaging at around 15 a week. This is a combination of Renting Homes Wales Act implications, Buy-to-let mortgages, and the increase in interest rates.
“There is no doubt therefore that this Welsh Government’s legislation is making people homeless, and piling the pressure on Conwy County’s taxpayers’ cash.
“Rather than expect the Cabinet of Conwy to fund the increased costs of temporary accommodation, the Welsh Government should commit to covering the extra expense encountered this financial year because of their legislation”.
