This week, 6 – 12 February is Children’s Mental Health week launched by the charity Place2Be’s. Originally starting in 2015, the objective is to shine a spotlight on mental health, specifically in children and young people.
In it’s nineth year, this year’s theme is “Let’s Connect”. The aim is for the children and young people to make valuable and healthy connections with families, friends and others. These relationships help support mental health and a sense of wellbeing, without them, they can feel isolated and lonely which can lead to a negative impact.
During the week, the charity encourage schools, youth groups and other organisations to get involved by using class activities to explore connections with others, and the benefits it has, as well as fundraising valuable money so that the charity can carry on with it’s vital work.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has commented on Children’s Mental Health Week, saying:
After the trauma of Covid-19, mental Health and wellbeing has never been more important, especially for young people. This week highlights the support and relationships that everyone needs for a healthy mental state.
The need is growing every day and data shows that on average three children in every class have a diagnosable mental health problem.
I would encourage schools, youth groups and other organisations to take part using the free resources provided by Place2Be’s. It helps us to connect with each other, and raise money for a worthy cause.
All parents and guardians can get involved to, such as through encouraging involvement in extracurricular activities. There are lots of youth groups across Aberconwy, such as the Air Cadets in Llandudno, rugby at Nant Conwy, and youth sailing at Llanfairfechan Sailing Club
