Janet Finch-Saunders MS has taken the Welsh Government to task for their failures on cladding and building safety issues.
The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy questioned Julie James MS, the Minister responsible for housing, regarding the Welsh Government’s slow response to the issue.
It comes after the Member hosted a Welsh Building Safety Crisis meeting last Wednesday in the Welsh Parliament, in which around 100 individuals participated.
Not a single Welsh Labour MS attended.
Speaking in the Senedd, Janet said:
“Five years and eight months on from Grenfell, hundreds of residents in Wales are living in fear that they could be caught in a similar horrific event.
“As concerned individuals put to me, Labour’s absence of representation at the building safety crisis meeting is stark evidence of the lack of empathy and willingness to help leaseholders undergoing financial and mental hardship while being trapped in unsafe buildings.
“In England, the UK Conservative Government is looking to prevent developers from operating freely in the housing market if they fail to sign and comply with the remediation contract, which will protect thousands of leaseholders across hundreds of buildings in England.
“Meanwhile, the Welsh Labour Government’s handling of the issue is a national disgrace.
“The Minister for Climate Change must urgently bring forward a statement on building remediation so that this nightmare can end. It is completely unacceptable that the Welsh Government wants the nation to wait until between the Easter and Summer term for a statement from them!”.
