Yesterday, Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, requested a statement from the Minister for Climate Change on the devastating impact of the 20mph law on bus services in North Wales.
Arriva Cymru have contacted the MS for Aberconwy to highlight the issues the blanket 20mph speed limit is already causing: punctuality problems and cancellations
It is expected that if the 20mph isn’t changed, there will have to be further frequency reductions, timetable amendments, route changes, and route withdrawals across North Wales.
Janet urged the Deputy Minister to come forward with an oral statement clarifying what modelling took place throughout Wales to understand the impact of 20mph on bus services, and to explain if funding will be found to pay for more buses and drivers, or if ultimately, the 20mph law will be scrapped.
Speaking after the statement, Janet said:
“ After only one week, the 20mph law is already wreaking havoc on our roads and to public transport. With buses running late and being cancelled, the law needs to be scrapped as a matter of urgency.
“Services in Aberconwy are now under serious threat, including the 13 between Llandudno and Prestatyn, the 12 between Rhyl and Llandudno, and the 14 and 15 from Conwy to Llysfaen via Llandudno.
“These are vital bus routes that are essential to our community. The Welsh Government should listen to the bus sector and not dismiss their evidence as teething problems.
“I have actively campaigned to improve bus services. If we do not want to see a deterioration Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru must allow the 20mph law to be scrapped”.

Mae Arriva Cymru wedi cysylltu â'r AS dros Aberconwy i dynnu sylw at y problemau y mae'r terfyn cyflymder 20mya cyffredinol eisoes yn eu hachosi: problemau prydlondeb a chanslo gwasanaethau.
Os na fydd yr 20mya yn cael ei newid, disgwylir y bydd yn rhaid lleihau amlder gwasanaethau ymhellach, diwygio amserlenni, gwneud newidiadau i lwybrau gwasanaethau a chael gwared ar wasanaethau ledled Gogledd Cymru.
Anogodd Janet y Dirprwy Weinidog i gyflwyno datganiad llafar yn egluro pa fodelu a ddigwyddodd ledled Cymru i ddeall effaith y cyfyngiad 20mya ar wasanaethau bysiau, ac i egluro a fydd cyllid yn cael ei ganfod i dalu am fwy o fysiau a gyrwyr, neu a fydd y gyfraith 20mya yn cael ei dileu yn y pen draw.
Wrth siarad ar ôl y datganiad, dywedodd Janet:
"Ar ôl wythnos yn unig, mae'r gyfraith 20mya eisoes yn amharu ar ein ffyrdd ac ar drafnidiaeth gyhoeddus. Gyda bysiau'n rhedeg yn hwyr ac yn cael eu canslo, mae angen dileu'r gyfraith hon ar unwaith.
"Mae gwasanaethau yn Aberconwy bellach dan fygythiad difrifol, gan gynnwys gwasanaeth rhif 13 rhwng Llandudno a Phrestatyn, gwasanaeth rhif 12 rhwng y Rhyl a Llandudno, a gwasanaethau rhif 14 a rhif 15 o Gonwy i Lysfaen trwy Landudno.
"Mae'r rhain yn wasanaethau bysiau hollbwysig sy'n hanfodol i'n cymuned. Dylai Llywodraeth Cymru wrando ar y sector bysiau a pheidio â diystyru eu tystiolaeth fel problemau cychwynnol.
"Rwyf wedi gweithio’n ddiflino i wella gwasanaethau bysiau. Os nad ydyn ni am weld dirywiad yn y gwasanaethau rhaid i Lafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru ddileu'r gyfraith 20mya".
