Further to the long running campaign by Janet Finch-Saunders MS to see the risk of further damage to Pont Fawr reduced, progress is being made with Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) meeting with the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent and Welsh Government, and making a formal request for a feasibility study.
The Local Authority and Welsh Government have both agreed that the two main areas of concern are:
- Vehicles meeting head-on on the bridge and having to reverse back onto the A470
- Large vehicles striking and damaging the bridge wall when turning onto the bridge from the A470
Given the physical and regulatory constraints of the bridge and surrounding road network, a simple solution is not forthcoming. It was therefore agreed that CCBC request that the Welsh Government commission a feasibility study to assess what options are available to address the two main concerns as it is felt that the issues have a far greater impact on the A470 than that of the County road network.
Welcoming this positive progress, Janet said:
“I am pleased that my engagement on this matter, which has even been described as proactive by the Deputy Minister for Climate Change, has brought about cooperation between the Welsh Government and Conwy County Borough Council.
“For years I have suggested that the solution needs to involve the A470, so am pleased that local and national governments have now finally acknowledged this.
“For the first time in several years, I am hopeful that actual solutions to the problems on Pont Fawr will be presented, but we must now wait to see if the Welsh Government agree to fund the feasibility study”.

O ystyried cyfyngiadau ffisegol a rheoleiddiol y bont a'r rhwydwaith ffyrdd cyfagos, does dim ateb syml. Cytunwyd felly fod Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy yn gofyn i Lywodraeth Cymru gomisiynu astudiaeth ddichonoldeb i asesu pa opsiynau sydd ar gael i fynd i'r afael â'r ddau brif bryder gan y teimlir bod y problemau yn cael llawer mwy o effaith ar yr A470 na rhwydwaith ffyrdd y Sir.
Wrth groesawu'r cynnydd cadarnhaol hwn, dywedodd Janet:
"Rwy'n falch bod fy nghyfraniad at y mater hwn, sydd hyd yn oed wedi'i ddisgrifio fel un rhagweithiol gan y Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd, wedi arwain at gydweithredu rhwng Llywodraeth Cymru a Chyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy.
"Ers blynyddoedd rwyf wedi awgrymu bod angen i'r ateb gynnwys yr A470, felly rwy'n falch bod llywodraethau lleol a chenedlaethol bellach wedi cydnabod hyn o'r diwedd.
"Am y tro cyntaf ers sawl blwyddyn, rwy'n obeithiol y bydd atebion gwirioneddol i'r problemau ar Bont Fawr yn cael eu cyflwyno, ond mae'n rhaid i ni nawr aros i weld a yw Llywodraeth Cymru'n cytuno i ariannu'r astudiaeth ddichonoldeb".
