Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is pleased to mark Diabetes Awareness Week, organised by Diabetes UK.
Diabetes UK has a rich history of advocacy, having been established in 1934 by the writer H.G. Wells and Dr. R.D. Lawrence, both of whom were diabetics. This week is dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes and encouraging individuals to share their personal experiences with the condition. This year, Diabetes UK want to talk about the health checks you need when you have diabetes.
Diabetes afflicts more people in the U.K. than any other serious health condition. There are 4.6 million Type 1 sufferers and an estimated 12.3 million people are potential type 2 diabetics.
Commenting on the news, Janet said:
“Raising awareness of diabetes and what changes people can make in order to reduce their risk is the extremely important, and I am pleased that Diabetes UK are spearheading this.
“Diabetes is expected to become a significant health crisis for the future of Wales’s population. This condition can greatly impact our lives and, when it progresses to advanced stages, can lead to numerous other health complications. Understanding the causes of diabetes is essential for reducing the risk of developing the disease.
“Over 200,000 people live with diabetes in Wales, equivalent to 1 in 13 people, the highest level of prevalence of any of the UK Nations.
“It is therefore vital that we have open and honest conversation about the need to have a healthy and balanced diet, one that contains a minimal amount of the sweet stuff; sugar. We must as a nation continue to raise awareness, improve care, and provide help, support, and information for people with diabetes and their families across Wales.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy yn falch o nodi Wythnos Ymwybyddiaeth Diabetes, a drefnir gan Diabetes UK.
Mae gan Diabetes UK hanes cyfoethog o eirioli, ar ôl cael ei sefydlu ym 1934 gan yr awdur H.G. Wells a Dr. R. D. Lawrence, y ddau ohonyn nhw â diabetes. Mae'r wythnos hon yn ymroddedig i godi ymwybyddiaeth o ddiabetes ac annog unigolion i rannu eu profiadau personol o'r cyflwr. Eleni, mae Diabetes UK eisiau siarad am y gwiriadau iechyd sydd eu hangen arnoch chi os oes gennych chi diabetes.
Mae diabetes yn effeithio ar fwy o bobl yn y DU nag unrhyw gyflwr iechyd difrifol arall. Mae 4.6 miliwn o ddioddefwyr Math 1 ac amcangyfrifir bod 12.3 miliwn o bobl yn ddioddefwyr diabetes math 2 posibl.
Wrth roi sylw am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
"Mae codi ymwybyddiaeth o ddiabetes a pha newidiadau y gall pobl eu gwneud er mwyn lleihau eu risg yn hynod bwysig, ac rwy'n falch bod Diabetes UK yn arwain y gwaith yma.
"Mae disgwyl i ddiabetes ddod yn argyfwng iechyd difrifol ar gyfer dyfodol poblogaeth Cymru. Gall y cyflwr hwn effeithio'n fawr ar ein bywydau a phan fydd yn symud ymlaen i gamau datblygedig, gall arwain at nifer o gymhlethdodau iechyd eraill. Mae deall achosion diabetes yn hanfodol er mwyn lleihau'r risg o ddatblygu'r clefyd.
"Mae dros 200,000 o bobl yn byw gyda diabetes yng Nghymru, sy'n cyfateb i 1 o bob 13 o bobl, y lefel uchaf o achosion o unrhyw un o wledydd y DU.
"Mae'n hanfodol felly ein bod yn cael sgwrs agored a gonest am yr angen i gael deiet iach a chytbwys, un sy'n cynnwys ychydig iawn o’r stwff melys; siwgr. Mae'n rhaid i ni fel cenedl barhau i godi ymwybyddiaeth, gwella gofal, a darparu help, cefnogaeth a gwybodaeth i bobl â diabetes a'u teuluoedd ledled Cymru."
