Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy was delighted to meet volunteers from Tŷ Hafan and Ty Gobaith last week.
The two hospices help seriously ill children and work with parents to give them the support they need while caring for their children.
They joined forced last week to create and display a butterfly, partly made by the children they care for, on the steps of the Senedd. The butterfly, part of the #ReachEveryChild campaign, was made from 3,655 smaller butterflies, representing each child with life-shortening conditions in Wales.
Currently, Tŷ Hafan and Tŷ Gobaith receive only 12% of their annual care costs from the Welsh Government, whereas children's hospices in England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland receive between 30% and 50%.
Commenting on the story, Janet said:
“It was an honour to meet with those who work and volunteer at the hospices. Their hard work and dedication is truly commendable and I know the work that they do is utterly life changing for parents and children alike.
“I spoke with a couple who had sadly lost their child but were extremely grateful to Tŷ Hafan who had helped in the later years of their child’s illness and made them as comfortable as possible.
“It is charities like this that make the hardest of times that little bit more bearable.
“I truly hope that the Welsh Government will bring funding in line with the rest of the UK. We must ensure we are properly funding these services as clearly they make such a huge difference to people’s lives.”
“I would like the thank all those who work at Tŷ Hafan and Ty Gobaith, and indeed everyone who works and volunteers their time for the needs of others”
