In 2022 North Wales Police recorded 99 incidents of dogs chasing, injuring or killing sheep. Unfortunately there are even more instances which are never reported; a 2020 survey found nearly a quarter of rural crimes were not reported.
It was greatly concerning that results of the 2021 National Sheep Association survey found that farmers, on average, saw two sheep killed per attack. And unfortunately, there is often little or no compensation for their loss.
Alongside the impact it has on local rural businesses, these preventable incidents put unnecessary pressure on our agricultural heroes. After a horrific attack in Monmouthshire in 2021 which saw 50 ewes killed by a dog Janet called for a National Rural Crime Taskforce for Wales. It is hoped this would create the right mix of education, campaigning and proposed legislative changes to prevent these appalling attacks.
As visitor numbers to Aberconwy are due to increase as we enter warmer months we should all be looking to share the simple message to ensure animal safety. Please keep your dog on a lead.
Farmers are reminded to report all livestock attacks via 101.
