Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has yesterday spoken on the state of housing and homelessness in Wales.
During the Welsh Conservative debate Janet highlighted that homelessness in Wales has reached alarming levels, with 13,539 households recorded as homeless in 2023-24, an 8% increase from the year before.
This is having a detrimental effect on the temporary accommodation spend.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“Whilst many of us are fortunate enough to have warm homes to celebrate Christmas in, we must not forget the thousands across Wales who have no home, are on the streets, or living in hotel rooms.
“Conwy Council spent nearly £4.4m on temporary accommodation during the 2023/24 financial year. In 2022/23, the expenditure was just under £4 million, compared to just over £3 million the previous year.
“This marks an increase of more than sixfold compared to what Conwy was spending just four years ago.
“At a time when Conwy is facing a shortfall of £31.2m, these figures are deeply troubling, and highlight the urgent need for the Welsh Government to get a grip with the homeless crisis in Wales.
“In short, Welsh Government need to do more to build new homes and bring empty properties back into use”.

Ddoe, siaradodd Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, am gyflwr tai a digartrefedd yng Nghymru.
Yn ystod dadl y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig tynnodd Janet sylw at y ffaith bod digartrefedd yng Nghymru wedi cyrraedd lefelau brawychus, gyda 13,539 o aelwydydd wedi'u cofnodi fel rhai digartref yn 2023-24, cynnydd o 8% ers y flwyddyn flaenorol.
Mae hyn yn cael effaith andwyol ar y gwariant ar lety dros dro.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:
"Er bod llawer ohonom ni’n ddigon ffodus i gael cartrefi cynnes i ddathlu'r Nadolig ynddyn nhw, rhaid i ni beidio ag anghofio'r miloedd ledled Cymru sydd heb gartref, sydd ar y stryd, neu sy'n byw mewn ystafelloedd gwesty.
"Gwariodd Cyngor Conwy bron i £4.4m ar lety dros dro yn ystod blwyddyn ariannol 2023/24. Yn 2022/23, roedd y gwariant ychydig yn llai na £4 miliwn, o'i gymharu ag ychydig dros £3 miliwn y flwyddyn flaenorol.
"Mae hyn yn nodi cynnydd o fwy na chwe gwaith o'i gymharu â'r hyn yr oedd Conwy yn ei wario bedair blynedd yn ôl.
"Ar adeg pan fo Conwy yn wynebu diffyg o £31.2m, mae'r ffigurau hyn yn peri gofid mawr, ac yn amlygu'r angen brys i Lywodraeth Cymru gael gafael ar yr argyfwng digartrefedd yng Nghymru.
"Yn gryno, mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru wneud mwy i adeiladu cartrefi newydd a dod ag eiddo gwag yn ôl i ddefnydd".
